Bio
Formed in 2010 over a mutual love of David Byrne and Brian Eno's classic album ‘My Life In The Bush of Ghosts’, Blood Sport is an arresting concoction of hypnotic Afro-beat and African guitar styles such as Soukous and Juju, locked grooves, and the raw energy of post-punk. The result is a noisy, rhythmic strain of experimental rock so unique that the band have come to dub it ‘aggro-beat’.
The underground success of their E.Ps ‘Fruits’ (released through Tye Die Tapes) and 'Ø' have earned the band a broad fan base; while their legendary part-improvised and completely uninterrupted live sets have seen them earn their stripes as not only regulars at DIY warehouse nights throughout the UK, but also sharing stages with artists as diverse as Alt-J, Django Django, Ghost Poet and Kanda Bongo Man. This year also saw Blood Sport being hand-picked to tour with Drenge and as well as an appearance at this year’s ‘Detestival’ event.
Their live set, a continuous wave of sound for 30 minutes, shifts and adapts with its surroundings, its energy propelled by relentless polyrhythms. They have a chameleon- like ability to evolve between wild and noisy or clean and reserved, dependent on the audience.
Meticulous planners with an (often unexplained) reason behind literally everything they do, Blood Sport released their full length LP ‘Life In Units’ on September 9th, an album that only builds upon the differentiated sounds of ‘Fruits', and shows an increasing interest in minimal repetition, drawn out grooves, and a hypnotic complexity.
Caught somewhere between the surreal distorted vocals and sinister pulse of opening track ‘The Woodcutter’ and the rich guitars of album closer ‘Dry Water’ lies an erratic collection of trance-inducing beats, sun-soaked guitar riffs and grainy effected vocals in tracks inspired by such varied topics as seven- year old beauty queen Honey Boo Boo, and Ghanaian sci-fi film 2016.
Recorded entirely in analogue and to tape with Karl Sveinsson (Gnod) at Queens Ark Audio and mastered by Dean Honer (Human League, I Monster) ‘Life In Units’ was the first official launch on Blood Sport’s own imprint Hybrid Vigour Records this September.

"Nothing Blood Sport do is by chance, and with Life in Units they have constructed an experimental behemoth which bears new fruit on every listen." - Now Then

“a band who [will] release one of the most head-turning albums of the year next week. Life in Units is the debut album by Sheffield's Blood Sport...... which features some of the most unique music I've come across in quite a while.” - The 405

Since releasing and touring Life In Units around the country, Blood Sport have been featured on Rocket Recordings’ (Goat, Gnod, Teeth of the Sea) 15 year anniversery compilation, ‘Crystallised’, and are now encasing themselves back inside the womb of The Audacious Art Experiment to work on new tracks for a release next spring. They’ve promised more rhythm, and more repetition.
