So it’s coming around again, the 2nd annual Liverpool Calling festival. If you were one of the around 600 people who piled into St. Lukes Bombed Out Church and The Shipping Forecast last year then you will know that it was an all-round, darn successful show. It sold-out both venues and got a ton of great feedback, being touted as one of the best new one day festivals for the city to celebrate.
This year things have been enlarged 5-fold in every sense; bands, venues, budget and hopefully turnout (although that may be technically impossible venue space wise).
This years line-up is immense and boasts my favourite childhood band Space who will headline The Bombed Out Church, it also has Paul Weller’s favourite band and mod-masters The Rifles, mix-genius D\R\U/G/S, post-rock pioneers Delta Sleep, Rock n Roll ruffians Twisted Wheel and a whole ton of other fantastic talents.
Yeah Buddy! wise, there are a whole host of affiliates who are going to be taking part in this years event so here is a breakdown of each stage and their Yeah Buddy! influences.
The Kazimier
One of Liverpool’s finest independent venues The Kazimier hosts a mega show headlined by The Rifles with Dexters, The Repeat Offenders, Colour, The Cheap Thrills, Reva in support as well as these 2 YB! family members;
The Jackobins
Liverpool rising pop-rock starlets The Jackobins are putting in a big effort for this one and are guaranteed to put on a superb show.
Low Winter Sun
One of the most prolific bands on the unsigned circuit, constantly releasing top quality, new material, we can’t wait to see which tunes they cram into their show opening set.
The Rag n’ Bone Man
Performing on the outdoor stage of the Kazimier, hailing from Scotland, his insane live show has been touted from the NME and many more as a must see and we would fully agree with that, YOU HAVE TO WITNESS THIS MAYHEM.
You Must Not Sleep
A quick draw-poet of the highest calibre, you would never believe he was such a blossoming youngster. If you can keep up with him you will be particularly impressed by his marvellous word-play
Bombed Out Church
Almost certainly the feather in Liverpool Calling’s cap, one of Liverpool’s finest art hub’s will host none other than scouse indie rock legends SPACE!!! Oh fucking yes! They will also be supported by a future pop gem Jetta, fresh off recording with Paloma Faith and Pharrell Williams, The Sundowners fresh from supporting Kasabian, indie favourites The Mono LP’s, the brilliant Sunday Star Club, the folk feast of Southbound Attic Band, fantastic up and comers Cavalry and our good pals;
Gold Jacks
They’ve just won a competition to headline a Q magazine show in London which is no mean feat, catch these boys before they go global.
The Shipping Forecast
In The Hold of Liverpool’s resident hipster haunt there is one of the finest dance/electro nights ever assembled. Led by Manchester ultra-talented D\R\U/G/S and with a supporting cast of Liverpool’s finest rave talents GhostChant, D R O H N E, Triphazard and YB! family members;
Detuned Radio
Their latest E.P launch was a party to remember and their set at last years Liverpool Calling went down a treat, so they are a highlight of this show.
Filter Distortion
Absolutely superb Dance-Pop from this trio has had ears pricked for some time. They revved a lazy Sunday crowd up at last years Liverpool Calling so I can’t imagine what they’re gonna do with the late night revellers here.
SuperSprite
One of the most beguiling and intriguing acts I have ever seen, he’ll will amaze you and you won’t even be expecting it.
Maguires
Our favourite venue in Liverpool and one that we have worked a few YB! shows at. The place alone is worth paying the £7 entry fee but their pizzas are incredible and the line-up is nothing short of Magnificent. Brighton noise merchant’s Delta Sleep come to Liverpool to a roaring excitement and will be supported by the fine The Mighty Ibex, the superb Polymath and these 2 YB! blinders;
Cleft
Picking up a lot of big love for the past year +, especially since the launch of their debut album Bosh! They are not to be missed, their live show is a real treat.
Kusanagi
A sheer audio assault and a live riff spree deserves to be seen, heard and full on experienced. You won’t take your eyes off of the stage.
Next to Nowhere
Independent bookshop in trade and a supercool music venue in its spare, News From Nowhere’s basement will be shaking books from shelves as In Evil Hour and friends descend upon Next to Nowhere
Elmo & The Styx
The launch of their album ‘Happy’ at Mello Mello was a raucous sweat-fest that won’t be forgot by its attendees any time soon, another punk dungeon ‘Next to Nowhere’ is bound to be the scene of another
Sheepy
Liverpools very favourite pop-punk monkeys, they make tunes as like McVities make digestive biscuits. Expect a run of hits from their latest album.
Enamel Animal
I ain’t gonna lie, EA are one of my very favourite unsigned bands right now. They have so much range from one song to the next you will never turn from the stage. Get their early to catch them, you will not regret it.
Liverpool Calling is certainly not worth missing, Day Passes are available at £35 which is unbelievable value. If you fancy just a singular slice of the pie though, individual tickets can also be purchased and they can all be found at these links;
