This is one show that I have been looking forward to for a good few weeks. Somewhere amongst the solid line up in the heart of a strong musical community, the awesome single being released, the huge step being taken by one of our favourite bands and the brilliant promotion behind this show, Yeah Buddy! got very excited.
We spoke to Secateurs during the recording of their debut single ‘She Lost Her Mind’ and its follow up ‘Howl At The Moon’ back in October and even then you could see the excitement in the faces of Gaz, Mark and Jay to finally get some full blown recordings out into the open. That excitement is understandable considering the amount of love that the debut has already received with a substantial amount of radio play already under its belt.
Secateurs said back in October that they wanted to host their launch shows somewhere different to the standard gig venues and that is something they certainly accomplished with this show. Most social clubs will be new to the concept of a band playing original material so to see four at once playing to a brimming crowd was something very unique for such a venue.
Unfortunately having to travel from Widnes to a completely unknown town in a different country rendered me tardy and I missed part of the undercard. What I did manage to catch was another stamp on the idea that the unsigned music scene of this area is one of the finest I have ever known. With members of Falls, Doppelganger and others simply coming along to watch the show and quality local supports to the superb local headliner it is obvious that this scene is overflowing with talent.
Blood Lips were particularly impressive with grinding guitars and well figured overlapping vocals (one of which was Beard of Wolves’ Adam Hughes), this band had everyone’s attention even before their well-crafted tunes began to meld into the memory. As a live act Blood Lips’ energy will keep you focused on them and rocking along, as a recorded act I have good feeling that they could take this pretty damn far.
Secateurs took to the stage to an audible rumbling of excitement just as this sold out show reached its most stuffed. Storming through a whole bunch of set staples including the upcoming single ‘Howl At The Moon’ it is easy to tell that this is a band that has mastered its live performance with a mighty combo of on stage chemistry and ratchet tightened song delivery.
With a bunch of fan favourites already whipped out, Secateurs had one last treat up their sleeves before their emphatic finale. The trio christened a fresh n’ juicy newbie for their hometown crowds delight and delectation. ‘Temp’ with its suspense driven drone and its healthily heavy pay off, may well be the focal point of a single launch show of larger proportions in future.
Secateurs sent the fans home happy but hungry for more with a deftly executed double. Firstly the song of the hour was finally presented to the tune thirsty audience and judging by their reaction it is obvious why this was chosen to be Secateurs’ debut single. ‘Shake You Down’ then brought the evening to a close in rapturous fashion despite the audience’s plea for more. Drummer Gaz returned to the stage to quip “We literally don’t have anything else to play”, well personally I was extremely content with what I heard, a couple more ‘Temp’s in the pipeline would be very exciting though.
