Please slow down Thomas McConnell, you're moving way too fast for us. We haven't been up and running for a year yet, when we started, Thomas McConnell, who was one of our original members, had a debut E.P and some Twitter chat with Sir Paul Mcartney to his name. In the first year of Yeah Buddy! Thomas has signed with San Francisco Bay Area based Wayne Coy Productions for worldwide representation, been endorsed by Hofner guitars, he has played with Pugwash and Squeeze and has been on tour with Glenn Tilbrook, China Crisis & Ian McNabb. Phew, on top of all that he has just released a new single 'Crocodile' with B-side 'Please Don't Slow Me Down'.
Lucky for us then, being the sweet ass cats that we are, we got a sneaky preview and we're really loving it. 'Crocodile' on first listen made me laugh, don't get me wrong, it was a very enjoyable maiden listen, it's just that it is so quirky and 60's that it is almost a parody of quirky 60's. But, after all, that's what Thomas does, that's what he has done for a few years now and that is, we hope, what he will continue to do. This is the sound that makes him the exciting, rising starlet that he is and who doesn't love a bit of a contemporary take of a classic style.
From the second that 'Crocodile' bounces into action, your attention is fastened. It is chock full of perks in hand claps, fret flairs and woo woo's. I tried to figure out the lyrics but fell short several times, settling for it being about a Crocodile, it is still singalong-able regardless and Thomas' chirpy vocals could lighten the mood at a widows club tea party. It is professional quality in theory and execution, radio ready and could well be another big step for this ceilingless young talent.
'Please Don't Slow Me Down' is as good a B-side as you could ask for. It is pure silk from the smooth vocals to the shoop shoop imploring rhythm. Don't discard this as just a bonus track, it stands alone on its own merits and is definitely worth a shout.
Now I'm off to hang loose and smoke a pack of Camels with some mods.
