What are we Talking About?
The magical, spiraling and & brain-twisting debut from California's CHON. The fact that this release comes 7 years into the band's career may seem like it has been a long time coming, the added fact that CHON still have members in their teens is truly mind-blowing. These guys started when some of their members where in junior school, listening to 'Grow' has me thinking that they are prodigy's of their craft.
'Grow' is heading to our shores later this month and it is set to warp your brain into a twisting-nether.
Summary
Jazz inspired prog, played with the precision of a hawk-eyed sniper, transient time changes combined with cascading riffs, and an ambient backdrop lead to an awe-inspiring record that has the capability to ease you into serenity as much as it can catch you off-guard to the point where you have to re-listen to work out what just happened.
We expect that this record is going to launch CHON from perching on the precipice of the realms of our independent/ D.I.Y remit to blasting off into the musical stratosphere. CHON have been a precocious talent for some time, this is the move that will see them turn from 'prospect' to a top tier attraction on their respective scene.
What Hooked Me?
I had whet my appetite at ArcTanGent festival last month. I got to meet the boys just prior to them playing to a huge crowd on the Yohkai stage. You can see the interview here;
The massive audience did not phase them at all and they rose to the occasion, impressing everyone in attendance. Particularly this guy who was having a whale of a time;
Special Move
Keep your ears pricked for the awesome breakdown and re-build at 2:35 of 'Perfect Pillow', like a wolf in sheepskin the riff comes across all delicate but it is evocative and played in the right tuning I doubt it would be out of place at a Heavy Metal show. Not so much of a face-melter but more a face-lifter.
Key Lyric
"I see myself in a different light"
The pick of a solid yet small collection of lyrics. They seem to rotate around a strained love affair. This particular line is open to interpretation and can evoke a few notions. I found myself thinking 'Do I see myself in a brighter or dimmer light the person in question!?' Well it's a thinker and that is exactly what lyrics should make you do.
Artwork
A pretty mess of vibrancy and tone that reflects the feel of 'Grow' perfectly. Vibrant colours to match vibrant riffs, it is all spewed across a pile of maple leaves; interpret that whichever way you choose. I like to think that it suggests that CHON can bring something that has fallen and become dull back to life. Isn't that nice.
Vital Info
CHON's debut full length is set for release on September 25th, Grow will be heavily anticipated by the loyal math/post/experimental/ prog-rock community that has embraced them. You can keep up to date with CHON's motions on the following links;
