As I walked into Leaf, me and my squeeze excited at another chilly down Mellowtone show, I was pleasantly surprised at the very ample crowd size. Not packed to the rafters but an impressive amount for an innocuous Wednesday evening and a perfect amount to provide a great atmosphere for this very special type of show. Mellowtone & Leaf are a match made in Charmington-on-Twee, what a combo.
First up, as we take our seats, is the introvertive (on stage anyway) Simon Herron. He sensitively picks his strings through each stripped back, delicate song in his finely pieced together set. The vulnerable and naive persona portrayed by Simon during his low-key performance offers elements of an endearing, shy charm at times, but at others his apprehensive mumbling between songs suggest a lack of charisma. A connection with the audience never goes a miss at live shows but I'm sure this is something that will develop with every, his songs are the most important thing and they certainly hit the mark.
Following and raising the bar to nigh on insurmountable levels on a live performance scale are Little Sparrow. This groups tightly interwoven sections and tri-vocal harmonies have the audience captivated from the start. In between songs, jovial exchanges and witty repartee build a strong rapport with the now intrigued audience, who's focus on the set is intensified with every song. Good job then that the song's keep on coming, each maintaining, if not improving in quality from the last. Little Sparrow's next single 'Struck Gold' is a particular highlight of the set with its dramatic undertones offset by heartfelt and charming overtones, this is one to look out for and is well worth some wide-scale attention and airtime. Little Sparrow is adept at telling stories with passion and enthusiasm shining through. Just to throw in an inevitable comparison I would say that they
are like as if PJ Harvey teamed with Iron & Wine and hired an Udu player. Top show
Next up is the young lass who is releasing her new E.P 'Every Little Amber' tonight. Again we have a purveyor of the quiet, understated performance that can be a little hit and miss. Again though, it is easy to see why this girl is causing a stir as she clearly has a distinct song-writing talent. "Every little ember falling/ lets me feel a little warmth for him" is a stand-out example of the kind of subtle hook that Laura is capable of producing to get the listener gently humming along. The young lady is the epitome of mellow and fits in this show like a daffodil in a florists garden.
Kudos again to the Mellowtone crew for putting on another laid-back folk master-class as the Beaten Tracks D.J spin a perfect array of fitting ditties to compliment the rest of the nights proceedings aptly. They've got their craft locked down these boys and it is an experience I would recommend to any music appreciator.
