So to set the scene on this one, this is totally new to us here at Yeah Buddy! we are aware of (Atlas), we know that they have ties with Monster Sound and their drummer is Leigh of Dirty Bernard fame, but other than that we had never heard their music prior to this...and we call ourselves an unsigned website, we should be ashamed of ourselves
'Blossom/ Open' welcomes us ever so delicately into the proceedings, it is gentle, patient and calculated in its constantly rising structure. That is some piece of music to kick shit off.
Almost as if it is directly linked to its predecessor 'ChorusVerseChorusVerseChoruCalypso' starts where 'Blossom' finished, I think it is at around 30 seconds in that I thought "I'm going to put this on a mixtape for my good pal Matt, he would love this". The E.P is already so good that I am planning an entire mixtape just so I can put this on it. Stellar!
'Cycles (What Happened When I Had My Genome Sequenced)' had me putting everything down closing my eyes and trying my utmost to take it all in, I believe the first 2 tracks prompted this urge along with the tracks opening. I new from the start that I was in for 5:45 of an audio spa session. The deep tissue massage was particularly soothing.
'Martyrs/ The Man Who Fell To Earth' closes the E.P out and showcases (Atlas) at perhaps their most emotionally inspired. With several mood swings and tone changes, it is a cap off to the E.P that lifts the spirits and snaps you out of the calm dormant state that the previous 3 tracks had led you to.
'Endless Empty Spaces' is a gloriously well-structured collection of expansive, atmospheric and quite beautiful songs. It eased me back to a time a few years back when I delved deep into, what I would describe as intelligent, sophisticated indie that acts such as Pela, Sea of Bees, Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens and Shout Out Louds purveyed. To even intimate thoughts of such brilliant acts is one thing but (Atlas) stand tall alongside them with this superb E.P.
YB! are so happy that we are now well acquainted with this ace band and that our credibility has been restored. Now to go listen again
You can Download 'Endless Empty Spaces' at the very benevolent price off 'Pay What You Like', as ever we suggest you treat it as if you have been given a high quality, lasting service and leave a fair tip.
