They Will Come Back For You is a suitably poetic title, signalling both a departure and a new beginning. The E.P begins hauntingly, the sound of wind blowing over a desolate and barren land, or so it seems, setting the scene perfectly for an E.P that seems to explore alienation and bleak landscapes. “Spires” is a nervous, disconcerting welcoming. Wheezy guitars and punchy, staccato drums become soaring riffs and thunderous thrashings, all underpinned by a growling bass. The song registers changes of pace so many times you lose count and you lose yourself too in a whirlwind of textures. “What fools these mortals” takes its title from Shakespeare’s deceptively festive A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This track takes it upon itself to stun the listener with awesome riffs and a surging bass line before dying out in a spluttering of feedback. Those drums really make the ground shake on this one. “Rhinoceros” lays out some rhythmic, groovy sections and juxtaposes them with abstract post-rock. Kusanagi are smart like that. “Danxia” has a more deliberate pace, lurching forward on Dean Caffery’s drum juice, it’s certainly the most laid back track here, and those chiming guitars make it a real treat. The E.P ends (more or less) with “One day, they will come back for you…”which is a fantastic showcase of the bands talents and perhaps the best song on the E.P. The bass passages beginning at 1.20 are worthy of special attention.
They Will Come Back For You is set to be released on the 27th of January, which is literally a few days away at this point. Make sure you get your copy, you owe it yourself.
