Less ‘Worried About Thomas McConnell’, more worried about the top 40.
On first listening to Thomas McConnell and reading about his career, your first thought is ‘Surely he’s already famous?’. Paul McCartney himself tweeted about Thomas’ cover of ‘New’ back in September, which is huge for an act trying to get into the music business. He is a dedicated musician who has a clear idea of where and what he wants to be, which really shows itself in his music, namely, ‘Penny (Won’t Help Me Now)’.
This song makes you both long for the old days and weep for the modern state of music that allows talent like this to not to be lauded as it rightfully should be. With a noticeably Beatles – esque sound, Thomas has created a fun and fast paced song that will be stuck in your head for a week at least. What shines through in his music is Thomas’ personality with its up-tempo guitar and eclectic repertoire of instruments. Drawing influences from the various classic rock sounds, we can hear the guitar and drums being accompanied by the tambourine and harmonica. This gives it a distinctly vintage feel and demonstrates the worth of instruments that we don’t see enough of in modern songs. The accompanying video is also well worth a watch with McConnell playing all parts of his band from different eras of music. This helps to display the various facets of the song but also sums up the experience of listening to Thomas McConnell; it’s fun, entertaining and technically impressive.
