Finely crafted dance-pop songs played by their refreshingly energetic makers where becoming a luxury long since seen in the musical realm. Fenech-Soler being one of the only appropriately appreciated breakthrough acts of this ilk from around 2010 to 2013 is quite frankly a bloody disgrace. The days of Goose, Chromeo & MSTRKRFT had been scattered for several years and where only tied together by the sheer brilliance of Metronomy and Friendly Fires. So it is so refreshing to see this fantastic genre hit a definitive up-curve of late. For the broad Brit-Award friendly chime of Disclosure and Imagine Dragons there is also the grittier, hipster-pleasing hype of Temples and Chvrches. Filter Distortion are a band that fit perfectly between both scales with radio friendly songs that have more than enough edge to please the sleeve rolling musos.
‘Cameras in the Dark’ is the first single to be released of their debut album and is a sparkling indicator for what is roundly expected to be a superb full-length. It sways across your sound-receptors like a cocksure hipster moving along an indie-dance floor, draped in River Island’s finest. Your first experience of this song will be a very enjoyable one and on further listens your admiration is bound to grow.
The vocals of this song for me are the standout element, whether it is the acutely reverbed vocals of the lead singer or the delicate tones of special guest Cheryl Anna. They are the kind of vocal that on first listen you think ‘they’ve got a good voice’ and you can’t ask for more than that, unless you’re a greedy tit.
All in all, what Filter Distortion have produced here is an absolutely superb Dance-Pop song that deserves the attention of not only its target market but a wider audience too. They can all take a lot of pleasure out of a track that is sure to garner a heap of praise, they also have a fair bit of gratitude to direct in Cheryl Anna’s direction too.
Filter Distortion will be launching ‘Cameras in the Dark’ on July 19th at Astral Coast festival, check it out here;
