Brighton-based Edityourhometown formed in 2013 and are a self-described math-rock band. I’m not a huge fan of “math-rock”; many bands so described appear to be orientated towards trying to impress with odd time sequences and inventive chord structures. The fact that a song’s intricate, complicated and technically “clever” doesn’t mean much if it sounds like a tape being chewed.
Edityourhometown, however, don’t fall into this “intricate but sterile” category; “Your So Fast For Being So Small” does have odd time sequences, inventive chord structures and is certainly clever, but it also bristles with emotion and ferocity. There’ no logic to why a song like this can work but it’s instantly intoxicating. This truly bizarre omelette testifies to the bands eclectic tastes; riotous chants melt into free-flow jazz, then samba(!), sheering instrumental sections and back to the demented vocal interplay. Its 3 minutes 14 seconds long but feels longer…in a good way. If you’re a fan of math rock then this will be pure manna if you’re more sceptical of this genre then this is evidence that it can work and doesn’t necessarily denote the triumph of technique over emotion.
