What Are We Talking About!?
A good long while in the making, but if you have heard enough of Glaswegians Vasa you know that they are the kind of band that like to push things into perfection. 'Colours' their debut is upon us at last and it is time to find out what has kept us all waiting. Hailed by the likes of GoldFlakePaint, The Skinny, 7-bit Arcade and even The Independent, Vasa are really starting to light up.
Summary
'Colours' from start to finish is an emphatic statement from Vasa. The opener 'Smashletes' is Vasa pushing you, not so gently into the deepest of ends. Winding and spiralling riffs form a vivid archway for you to pass through into the main body of 'Colours' where we find singles and set favourites 'Fat Ronaldo', 'Cynthia' & 'Not A Cop'. See those 3 titles on the track listing will be very comforting to Vasa's faithful fan base.
Combine a host of recognisable favourites with some absolutely pearly tracks standing proudly along side them and you have, potentially, the most exciting debut, spanning the genres of post/math and prog-rock, that we have seen in quite some time. Vivid, euphoric & vibrant, 'Colours' is like the fireworks display of 616 Bonfire Nights X 437 New Years Eve's. You won't just hear it, you'll feel it.
What Hooked Me
I've been a fan of Vasa myself for a while, I've booked them several times and aside from their excellent music and compelling live set, I find them to be jam up guys and stand up professionals. Seeing the singles and tunes that I love on the track listing was a huge draw. Upon my first listen I found myself going back to both 'As Long As It Doesn't Explode' and 'Ergonomic Keyboard', the former is a mood-swinging, riff montage forged in purgatory, the latter is a masterclass of dueling guitarist and fluid rhythm that excels itself for half a dozen minutes and a little bit more.
Special Move
Tracks 'Punched' and 'Unpunched' offer vital respite between all of the spiralling and cascading the album puts you through. As far as dynamics and the flow of the album, this is as smart a move as any band of this complexity could make. The story and body of an album can often be just as important as its individual tracks, Vasa have evidently put a lot of thought into both and it shows throughout.
Artwork
Ain't she a beauty!? An ode to guitarist Blaine's experience with synaesthesia induced by Vasas gloriously bright music. Blaine sees colours that he associates with his bands music and that is what the entire album and it's artwork has come to embody. The artwork is an explosion of colour as is the album itself.
Line From The Band
"Going into the studio, we were all functioning strongly as a unit and it helped a lot when we were recording. Turn it up loud and enjoy. Maybe have an Irn-Bru with it as well"
Vital Info
‘Colours’ is Released on 16th October
The band will be appearing at Mugstock, ArcTanGent and Carefully Planned Festival over the coming months with further headline tour dates still to be announced.
